An observation deck has been installed on Avikalnis Hill, offering sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. From here, one can gaze upon the blue expanse of the Curonian Lagoon and enjoy a view of the Avikalnis Cape (peninsula) and its meadows. Avikalnis Hill is a 36.5-meter-high dune, from which the Nagliai Nature Reserve, with its Grey (Dead) Dunes, stretches 9 kilometers to the south. From the Avikalnis viewpoint, you can clearly see the southern part of the parabolic dunes and the landscape of ancient Scots pine forests—remnants of the old Juodkrantė forest. Here, you'll also learn about "wolf trees" and discover what kinds of butterflies inhabit the sandy meadows of the Curonian Spit.

There are several theories about the origin of the name "Avikalnis." The first is based on sound assimilation and translation. The German name of the hill, “Schapen (Berg),” as recorded on a 1796 map, gradually changed to “Schafen (Berg),” which in German means “Sheep” (thus, “Sheep Hill” or "Avikalnis" in Lithuanian). The second theory suggests that the hill was named by locals because, when viewed from the Curonian Lagoon, its shape resembles a sheep’s head.

Visitors to Avikalnis will have the chance to enjoy breathtaking views, feel the tranquility of nature, and relax in the shade of the trees growing there.
