In order to fascilitate control of fisheries in Curronian lagoon, special system of signs – weather vanes- was estabished in 1844. Every fisherman had to attach this identifying sign at the top of the stem of their kurenkahn. This sign – weather vane was a metal plate and was colored in black and white. Later on, Curonnian spit‘s fisherman started to add a little red and white flags at the ends of the vane. Also, they started to decorate it with cut out and collored wooden boars. You could identify which vilage the fishermn was from just by looking at the weather vane attached to his kurenkahn. The history, the evolution and the examples of those weather vanes are presented at the D. and R. Zadeikiu Weather vane gallery in Juodkrante. In the gallery you can also see some literature for the tourists, original products out of ceramic and fabric, and some original paintings.
