12th kilometer of the road from Smiltyne to Nida. It is said that the barracks that stood in this valley in the 19th and early 20th centuries housed freelance women deported from Memel for free behavior who had to work on dune planting. Another version of the name of the place: in 1870 the barracks housed some of the French prisoners who appeared on the Curonian Spit during the French-Prussian War (1870–1871). The captive French had to work on landscaping the dunes. Local Curonians visited hard-working French prisoners in the dunes, gave strangers a drink, ate food, and this was not forbidden.
