The confluence of Lake Merguva and the Nemunas River
-
The place where Nemunas comes together and his biggest old riverbed which has become a lake is really impressive. The old riverbed is referred to Merguva (Girl). It is the largest in these neighborhoods: the area is about 40 ha, the length is 3.2 km, the average width is about 120 m. The Merguva is already mentioned in the Crusaders' road descriptions to Lithuania in 1395. According to the speakers, the Merguva can mean lagoon, water, humidity. The folklore remembers it differently: the fairies that have loved Rambyn's neighborhoods for a long time - the girl. They used to wash in the old riverbed, it could get a man into the depths. That's were the name of the lake is comes from. Natural meadows sprinkled with flood stretches are lurking between Nemunas and Merguva. They stretch across a long, cross-water peninsula. During the spring floods, as water levels rise significantly, the waters of Nemunas and Merguva merge into one powerful river. The confluence is convenient to look at the observation pitches on the runway winding off the Nemunas coast. At the confluence, a sandy shore, popular with fishermen and holidaymakers, is well available.
