The origin of the crosses is associated with the old pine tree nearby at which outlaws, thieves, rebels were flogged or hanged in the period of serfdom. People believed that the place was sacred. At the crossroads, there used to be a sideway shrine at which people would give vows and hang rosaries. As the wayside shrine eroded, the people began to build crosses. In 1982, the crosses were destroyed, but this did not put an end to this tradition.
