In 2007, Šlavė escarpment was given the status of a state protected geological heritage in order to preserve the exposed Quaternary and Neogene rocks. The Šlavė Valley is the only place in Lithuania as well as in the Baltic states and Scandinavia having sediments from the eldest interglacial period. The outcrop is 19 metres high and 66 metres long. At the slopes of the Šlavė Valley, formations of the three geological systems - Devon, Neogene and Quaternary - are found. Moreover, pre-glacial Quaternary sediments from the period when glacier started to form in the mountains of Scandinavia were also found.
