Karvaiciu dune is a geomorphological monument of nature. This dune is around 59,4 meters high and is declared to be a protected natural monument in 1995. Karvaiciu dune protects the tragic history of the sandbound village. Karvaiciai was one of the oldest villages. Its history dates back to XV century. At around 1600, the forest that was protecting Karvaiciai village from the sand blasting was starting to disappear. Blasting sand buried homesteads, it also buried the only church this village had. Karvaiciai residents tried to stop the sand from overtaking their homesteads by digging the sand, by building fences. However, the dune was getting bigger and higher and was threatening the village every day. Heartbroken people had to leave. 1797 sand expelled the last Karvaiciai residents. Sand stopped, and now this dune marks the place where Karvaiciai village used to stand.
