The most beautiful and majestic Gothic castle in Lithuania, the ornate residence of the Grand Duke of Lithuania, the place of solemn banquets, and in the beginning 16th c.: a prison for disobedient dukes. Trakai Island Castle, which has regained its image, is one of the biggest attractions in both summer and winter. It is the only castle in Eastern Europe built on an island. A 300 m long wooden bridge leads to the island. The castle houses the Trakai History Museum, its visitors are fascinated by old frescoes, artistic stained glass windows, secret passages and knight tournaments taking place in the castle yard.
