The Amber Hillfort is located near the town of Kartenos, on the left bank of the Minija River. It was built in the early 1st millennium and was used until the 5th–6th centuries. On the terrace west of the hillfort, a cemetery operated from the end of the 1st millennium BC until the 13th century. In the 16th–17th centuries, Kartenos Manor stood on the hillfort, surrounded by three ponds, with a Reformed Evangelical church nearby. It is believed that the manor was destroyed by fire in the mid-17th century during the wars with Sweden. The hill is called Vyšnių kalnas (Cherry Mountain) by local residents, who tell various legends about it. One of them says that when the Swedes attacked the manor, the beautiful daughter of the lord hid in the treasure cellar, where she was buried alive under the ruins of the palace. She could only be freed once every 300 years. Once, when the time of her rescue was approaching, she appeared in a dream to a sick man and asked him to rescue her in exchange for restoring his health. He agreed, and the beautiful girl told him to make many rowan crosses and, as soon as he entered the castle dungeon, to kiss everyone who came near him through the crosses. The man promised to do so, quickly recovered, and on Easter morning went to Cherry Hill. Suddenly, a servant appeared out of nowhere and led him into the castle dungeon, where a black girl was sitting on a golden chest. Soon, the man was overcome by all sorts of terrifying creatures, which he kissed as the beautiful girl had instructed him in his dream. With each kiss, the girl grew paler and paler. And when only her head remained, a terrible toad appeared, spewing fire from its throat. The man was terrified, dropped everything, and ran away. As he ran, he heard the girl wailing, "If only you had never been born... Now I will have to suffer for another 300 years..." When the man returned home, he soon fell ill again. Before he died, he wanted to show his relatives the place where the treasures were hidden in the underground chambers, but he died before reaching Cherry Hill. Another legend says that the lord of Kartenos Manor loved cherries very much and planted a large orchard. When the Swedes burned down the manor, the orchard remained and every spring it decorated the hill with white flowers. That is why it was named Cherry Hill.
