The Burveliai sacred hill is located in the lands of Aukštaitija on the left bank of the Nevėžis. It is an impressive hill which is overgrown with pine, oak, aspen, birch and other trees and shrubs, surrounded by swampy meadows. It is believed that in the distant past the hill was on an island. Burveliai Castle is mentioned in the 14th century in German chronicles. It is written that on 15 of August in 1372 the army of the Livonian master destroyed Burveliai castle near Nevėžis. The pre-war Lithuanian encyclopedia states that there were found human bones and wall remains during excavations of the hill. There are still some fragments of the chapel foundations and the remaining 3 x 3 m pit in Alkakalnis.
