The Uzpelkiai Strict Nature Reserve protects the ecosystem of wet and swamp deciduous forests with habitats of European Community importance (swamp deciduous forests and alluvial forests), and the habitats of protected species of plants and animals, especially the White-cheeked Cuckoo, the Red-cheeked Cuckoo, the Green-cheeked Bitterbrush, the Erect-tailed Buntings, the Greater Siberian Golden-cheeked Fritillary, the White-eyed Susan, the Brown-headed Satyr, and the Red-headed Satyr.
