Biosphere polygons are established for monitoring the national and regional environment in the territories of special geoecological significance. The biosphere polygons are established to preserve birds and other species, and natural habitats important for the European Community by ensuring their favourable condition; to carry out monitoring and research of species and state of their habitats; to collect and analyse information about the variety of species and the impact of human activity on natural ecosystems; to perform nature protection experiments in natural complexes and surrounding territories; to ensure balanced use and restoration of natural resources; to promote ideas and modes, and how to preserve biodiversity. At present, there are 32 biosphere polygons in Lithuania.
