There is only one windmill in Vilkaviškis district - Vištytis Kanapkis windmill. In 1925, Vištytis resident Jonas Kanapkis built a wooden windmill on Ilgasis kalnas (‘Long Hill’) at the junction of three roads. Once the windmill started operating, the wind turned its blades for three decades, while long queues of carters trailed off to both sides, sometimes having to wait several days. When a collective farm was established, the blades were removed from the windmill and the milling work was done by an electric motor. For more than a decade after 1978, an ethnographic museum operated in the windmill. At this time, the Vištytis windmill is just an exotic decoration on the landscape and a valuable object of technical patrimony. This unique windmill with surviving technology still in good condition and a miller’s residence is included in the Republic of Lithuania Register of Unmovable Cultural Treasures.
