One of the oldest settlements in Vilkaviškis district is located on the shore of Lake Vištytis. In 1570 King Žygimantas Augustas signed a decree of Magdeburg privileges (municipal self-rule) for Vištytis. The village of Vištytis became a small town. Vištytis was granted a stamp and coat of arms with the image of a unicorn. Vištytis was famous as a multicultural region populated by germans, russians, lithuanians and jews. Around 1912 there were four houses of prayer in the town: synagogue, orthodox, evangelical lutheran and catholic churches. In the Vištytis town you can see 18 century street network, quadrilateral square, evangelical lutheran church, Vytautas monument and 1829 built St. Trinity Church, which is one of the major architectural highlights of the town.
