Šatrija is one of the most famous archeological monuments not only in Samogitia, but also in Lithuania. This is evidenced by numerous archeological finds: tombs of IX-XII C., funeral urns, teardrop cups, stone bowl, amber and glass ornaments, stone axes. According to archaeologists, at the top of the hill once stood a wooden castle, and people have lived in the area since the 2nd century B.C. It is believed that here stood one of the most important centers of Lithuanian religion, destroyed by the introduction of Christianity in Samogitia. Simonas Daukantas and Motiejus Valančius wrote in their works about the fact that the first priests of the Samogitian diocese resided in Luokė, not in Varniai.
