On the shore of Lake Vištytis, in the forest of Šilelis, clear water trickles from the Sacred Spring. People say that in times gone by, the water of this spring was truly extraordinary. A blind person only needed to wash his eyes with this water to be able to see again and the water made slow-healing wounds suddenly heal up. People who believe in the miraculous powers of the water of this Sacred Spring come from all over Lithuania to splash themselves with this water and on a little hill near the spring they erect little crosses. Year after year the number of crosses increases, and the people who live nearby are starting to call it Hill of Crosses. There is no accurate evidence to say when people started to believe in the miraculous power of this water. But local elderly residents tell interesting story, that the first cross was erected by a poor peasant even before World War I.
