Vištytis stone is the largest and most impressive boulder in Vištytis Regional Park. The great rock of Vištytis is also called The Miraculous, The Footprinted, or simply The Great. This rock is on the protected list of Lithuania’s top ten boulders and it is included in the list of Mythological Places in the Republic of Lithuania Register of Unmovable Cultural Treasures. This huge boulder of glacial origin is irregularly-shaped. At the top is an indent, still called the Devil’s Footprint. Rainwater gathers in depressions in the rock, and many people still believe that this water has curative powers. It is thought that in ancient times this rock was used as an altar in the ancient Lithuanian religion. The legends surrounding this rather impressive Great Rock can be arranged into five subject types.
