These are the only signs of urban boundaries that remain in Lithuania, marking the boundaries of the Magdeburg city of Merkinė in the sixteenth century. Of the 4 survived only 2. One on the left side of Vilnius Street, in the eastern part of Merkinė, and one on Kaunas Street will extend the road from Merkinė to Subartonys. A. Biržys wrote in his book “Cities and towns of Lithuania”, which appeared in 1931: 4 pillars were formed around Merkinė on the most important 4 roads. Two have collapsed and two have still survived. There were towers and bells hanging at the top of the pillars. By the end, there were coats of arms and paintings of saints on six corners. All the pillars were the same thickness and style". Built by granting Merkinė the rights of the city of Magdeburg in 1569.
