The lighthouse is the main accent of the Urbo hills. The first lighthouse in Nida started work in 1874. It was hexagone shaped, 27 meters tall and made out of red bricks. While the lighthouse was being built, Urbo hill, which is 51.4 meters tall, was being planted with plants. Stairs made out of stones that led to the lighthouse still remain to this day. These stairs were built by French soldiers that were captured by the Germans during the French-Prussia War in 1870-1871. The first Nida’s lighthouse functioned all the way up to the Second World War and was destroyed by the german army in 1944. The current lighthouse was built after the war.
