As contemporaries recall, the partisans of the Purvinė Forest were disciplined, courageous, and widely known for their attacks against the occupiers. The group was led by the fearless fighter Pranas Beleckis. The security services closely monitored the partisans and made plans to destroy them. The fighters managed to avoid capture for a long time and were able to escape the operations of the Cheka and army attacks. The summer of 1949 was fateful for the fighters. Troops were called in to Mažeikiai not only from the surrounding districts, but also from Latvia and Estonia. On June 6, after receiving detailed reports from agents "Gomna" and "Saulytė," MGB leaders carried out a military operation in the Purvinė and Ramoniškiai forests. The site of the death of the Vyčio partisan group is now the edge of a forest, where a modest cross stands among the trees and a white cross stands further away, commemorating the blood of the fighters who died here.
