Kalnalis is located in a picturesque area surrounded by the wide Salanto and Kūlupio valleys. Here, in 1777, Duke Andrei Oginsky built St. Lawrence Church, where the future bishop Motiejus Kazimieras Valančius was baptized on February 17, 1801. In 1882, the church was destroyed by lightning. Thanks to the efforts of priest S. Jucevičius and parishioners, it was rebuilt in 1883, and in 1884, a graceful bell tower was erected opposite it. Above the church and bell tower rise ornate, openwork crosses – a monument to 19th-century cross-crafting. In 2006, on the initiative of the Salantai Regional Park Directorate, a 15-meter-high observation tower was built, offering a wonderful panorama of the Salanta River valley.
