Kirkilai lakes are particularly attractive for their winding shores, picturesque peninsulas, straits, coves and islands. Kirkilai Lake District is a unique element of the landscape, the only one in the Baltics. Due to the special hydrological and hydrochemical conditions, the fauna and flora of these lakes are unique. Researchers at the Institute of Botany have revealed the exceptional ecological structure of this lake. Due to this uniqueness, the lakes are included in the Natura 2000 network of sites.
