In the chronicle of the Order of the Knights of the Cross, Alkakalnis (Victory Hill (Auken)) was mentioned for the first time in 1203 when the Samogitians were baptised at Aukaimis. To facilitate the baptism, the chief priest was first forbidden to perform his rites, then the sacred fire was extinguished, and finally the priest's shrine, where sacrifices were offered, was destroyed. It is said that this was the site of the last temple of the old Samogitian religion and of the last Krivian blood priest, Gintautas, who lived there.
